    THE BIRD

The great crested grebe has run out of reed beds.

It normally builds its nest in the reeds, at the water's edge. So does the Eurasian coot. But on Lake Geneva, there are almost none left.

    It falls back on harbours

It nests on whatever floats just above the water: swim platforms, boat covers, mooring lines.

    Near threatened in Switzerland

That is the great crested grebe's status.

An occupied nest must not be touched

Art. 17 of the Swiss Hunting Act, everywhere in Switzerland, including on a private boat.

    THE PROBLEM

A nest on the boat, and the season is lost.

Swim ladder, net, boat cover, underside of the gangway: it takes whatever floats. As long as the nest is active, neither the nest nor the boat can be moved. At least 30 days, in the middle of the season.

    WITH THE PLATFORM

A platform nearby, and the nest moves.

The grebes bring their own twigs to it and settle there. The boat stays free.

    Two ways to get involved.

Amounts are discussed case by case, depending on the number of platforms and the harbour chosen. In both cases, your logo can appear on the platforms.
